The Challenge

The organization needed a multiyear strategic plan that reflected the expertise and insight of diverse stakeholders and would hold up in a fast-changing financial, political, and educational landscape.

Our Approach

We started before the plan itself, building the framework, structure, and language that would give the entire planning process a shared foundation. That scaffolding keeps a Board and an organization aligned even as the substance of the plan gets debated.

We then stood up a Guiding Team built deliberately for diversity of perspective: different leadership levels, workstreams, and tenures, all in the room together.

Before proposing any direction, we conducted a robust Current State Assessment, gathering, synthesizing, and analyzing input from staff, Board members, funders, and partners, so the plan’s priorities would be grounded in where the organization actually stood.

From there, we partnered with the Guiding Team through an iterative process to build out the plan’s priorities, goals, and strategies. We then translated the plan into an implementation plan with clear tactics, owners, metrics, and milestones. Many strategic plans skip this step, and it is the step that determines whether a plan changes anything.

Throughout, we kept the wider organization invested through all-staff meetings, ongoing stakeholder communication, and dedicated sessions with both the Executive Committee and the full Board.

The Outcome

  • The Board approved the strategic plan unanimously.
  • The plan is in effect and actively driven by its implementation plan.
  • The organization now has a durable planning framework and Guiding Team model it can reuse for future strategic cycles.

Why This Matters for AI

When technology changes faster than an organization’s planning cycle, AI decisions hold up best when they sit inside a larger strategy. The practices that carried this plan (a shared framework, a team with many perspectives, an honest read of current conditions, and an implementation plan with owners and milestones) are the same ones organizations need to make AI decisions that last.
